UFC Vegas 63 FanDuel Fight Focus

UFC Vegas 63 takes place this weekend at the Apex Center in Las Vegas, Nevada. The main card features a matchup of Calvin Kattar and Arnold Allen which should be a banger. The prelims and undercard are also fairly decent for an Apex event with two heavyweight fights, and a handful of surging contenders as well.

With such a decent slate comes the requirement to make the most of your lineup. With only eleven fights and several engaging matchups you will need big scores from your fighters more than ever. The best way to get there is to target fights rather than fighters, which is what this article is all about.

Below you will see my recommended fights to target on the FanDuel slate for UFC Vegas 63. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to tweet @WeWantPicks on Twitter and they will definitely get back to you ASAP.

FIGHT #1 TO TARGET (-280 FDGTD)

WALDO CORTES-ACOSTA ($19) vs. JARED VANDERAA ($13)

Here we have two very large men colliding inside the cage. When it comes to knockouts the heavier the men fighting, the more likely we are to see one stop moving. This fight should be no different and the line reflects that as it sits the most favored fight to end inside the distance on the entire slate.

Waldo Cortes-Acosta is fresh off of the Dana White Contender Series where he ended his fight with a knockout. While WCA was active in that win and achieved the first round knockout, he was also extra hittable with only a 44% striking defense. His activity was insane and put him over the top, averaging over eleven significant strikes per minute.

Jared Vanderaa on the other hand is on a four fight losing skid that includes being knocked out by Chase Sherman in his last outing. Vanderaa is historically an active heavyweight that can hang in fights longer than you like him to. In his five losses he has been knocked out three times however, and that can be quite problematic.

I know which side I am on in this one, but regardless this fight should end in a finish and a good fantasy score. Make sure to have one of them in your lineup.

FIGHT #2 TO TARGET (-225 FDGTD)

DUSTIN JACOBY ($17) vs. KHALIL ROUNDTREE ($15)

There is no better fight for a FanDuel slate that two guys with power that want to stand in the pocket with one another and throw bombs. This fight is just that, and definitely has the potential to put up a big score in your FanDuel contests.

Dustin Jacoby is a very skilled striker who hasn’t lost in the UFC since 2012. He did have one draw as well against Ion Cutelaba, but he was taken down nine times in that fight. There is no threat of that in this fight. Jacoby has a very nice striking differential with almost 60% striking defense, which is pretty solid by MMA standards. Jacoby could win this fight by knockout, but also has the technical ability to run up a high scoring decision.

Jacoby’s opponent is Khalil Roundtree. Roundtree is a less technical striker, but surely does come equipped with the power to end a fight. His striking differential is negative which isn’t good, and is very hittable with a striking defense of 49%. None of that negates the fact that one solid connection ends a fighter's night however. Jacoby has never been knocked out in the UFC however, so it will be a somewhat tall task.

FIGHT #3 TO TARGET (-200 FDGTD)

CHASE HOOPER ($22) vs. STEVE GARCIA ($8)

This fight has a very wide line in favor of Chase Hooper, but depending on how this fight plays out that line might be far too wide. There is a world where this stays a standing striking match and Hooper doesn’t get his hands on Garcia, and in that event, Garcia should probably be the favorite.

Chase Hooper, while not completely clueless about striking and wrestling, is very much a BJJ specialist. He is very likely to submit his opponents when he is able to get a hold of them. Beyond that he is a work in progress, and luckily for him, he is super young and has the time to evolve his MMA game. From a pure striking perspective however, Hooper is a bit less than impressive. To get a finish he will likely need to find a way to get this fight to the ground.

Garcia on the other hand is a solid striker, although is somewhat hittable himself, and comes into this with 100% effective takedown defense. That is the number that concerns me with this fight. If Garcia is able to keep Hooper off of him, I think this could quickly spiral out of the reach of Chase Hooper and become a big dog upset. It certainly has the potential anyway.

Regardless of the winner in this one, they should hit value. Either Hooper by submission or ground and pound – or – Garcia by unanimous decision.
