We missed last week’s article due to some personal obligations, and then this week was the most stressful week of my time with We Want Picks due to the GoDaddy hosting issues that brought the website down. Now that we have that worked out, we are back for a simple look at what fights should be good to target as well as my thoughts on those fights.
This slate is loaded with massive favorites, and for the most part it looks like there is reason why the favorites are so massively favored. That being said, not all fights are created equal and not all massive favorites end up looking like it. Let’s take a dive into the fights that I believe you might want to consider in your FanDuel lineups for the UFC 292 FanDuel slate.
Below you will see my recommended fights to target on the FanDuel slate for UFC 292. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to tweet @WeWantPicks on Twitter and they will get back to you ASAP.
FIGHT #1 TO TARGET (-650 FDNGTD)
GREGORY RODRIGUES ($21) vs. DENIS TIULIULIN ($9)
I am a massive Robocop fan, and I don’t think I have ever been bored by Denis Tiuliulin either. This one should be pretty exciting for as long as it lasts. Gregory Rodrigues is the clearly more impressive fighter from the well-roundedness standpoint, however he may be the victim of his own love for achieving knockouts. That is not his path, but it is the path he seems to love.
Gregory Rodrigues is a great grappler with solid takedowns as well. He does have power in his hands, which he has plenty of faith in, but that isn’t his actual path here. Recently there was a video circulating social media from Rodrigues that seems to indicate that he has seen the error of his ways, and he has renewed his commitment to grappling. If that is accurate then I don’t see a world where he doesn’t run though his opponent in this fight.
Denis Tiuliulin is a powerful striker, but that is about where his skill set stops at the UFC level. He isn’t the cleanest technical striker, and doesn’t wrestle or grapple in any way to speak of either. He could surely connect with something and find the chin of Rodrigues which fared poorly in his last fight, but short of that…not likely he finds a way to win here.
If you can get Gregory Rodrigues in your lineups you should certainly try, but with so much of the slate being top heavy the better fantasy play in tournaments might just be taking the shot on Tiuliulin – especially on FanDuel where a grapple heavy fight might not score that great.
FIGHT #2 TO TARGET (-360 FDGTD)
WEILI ZHANG ($23) vs. AMANDA LEMOS ($14)
There are only a handful of women’s MMA fighters that I get excited about when it comes to fantasy platforms, and Weili Zhang is one of them. This isn’t because women don’t score well, because in reality nothing can be further from the truth – especially on FanDuel – but rather because I often find myself not having a great read on the fight and picking the winning side is nearly like throwing lawn darts.
In this fight, I have no delusions regarding which fighter is more likely fighter to win here. Weili Zhang is the much more well rounded fighter and I believe that she can hang on the feet as well. On the Lemos side you get power upside and the potential for a scramble submission. For me that just isn’t enough, I think Weili dominates this fight, but I am not sure she finishes it and that bothers me.
Without feeling very strongly about a finish I think I will be limiting Weili Zhang exposure to cash and small-field single-entry, which is easy for me because I don’t play massive tournaments. If I did though, I can get on board with how helpful it would be to get equity in this fight for a $9 savings.
FIGHT #3 TO TARGET (-280 FDNGTD)
ANDRE PETROSKI ($19) vs. GERALD MEERSCHAERT ($11)
This fight is sure to be a grappling show like we haven’t seen in quite a while. On the favorite side we have Petroski who should have the power and takedown ability advantage. On the other we have the veteran GM3 who I believe has a slight grappling edge, and should have the edge on the feet as well in the event neither man is able to grapple effectively. Finally I believe that Meerschaert has the cardio advantage as well and that could prove problematic for Petroksi if this fight extends.
For me GM3 is the clear side here, but I understand taking a shot on the first round KO upside of Petroski as well. Personally I will be using Meerschaert and hoping for the three round striking decision that I think could happen being what plays out.
