We picked some solid fights to focus on last week, but my being on the Marcos Rogerio de Lima side was a critical error. Derrick Lewis showed out, and I hope those of you that had the guts to play him was compensated immensely for the testicle reduction surgery you will surely need down the line.
Short memories make champions though, so this week I am turning my focus onto UFC Nashville. This slate is a bit odd in the sense that I believe the lowest salary tiers are priced perfectly for the type of contests that I play, but tend to make me believe that things will be much more random for those playing massive tournaments.
Below you will see my recommended fights to target on the FanDuel slate for UFC Nashville. If you have any questions please don’t hesitate to tweet @WeWantPicks on Twitter and they will get back to you ASAP.
FIGHT #1 TO TARGET (-280 FDGTD)
TATIANA SUAREZ ($22) vs. JESSICA ANDRADE ($8)
Nothing makes me happier than when my favorite fight on a slate is women’s MMA. This one should be an absolute banger. We have Tatiana Suarez in only her second fight back from injury layoff, and her first fight back at 115 pounds. She is fighting everyone’s favorite division flexible fighter, Jessica Andrade – who has no issue at either 115 or 125 pounds.
Tatiana Suarez is the prototype wrestler in the women’s divisions, and will likely be the champ one day in the not-so-distant future if I had to guess. Suarez is a dominant force in the wrestling department, getting takedowns as she pleases and then using those takedowns to find ground and pound or submission victories. Striking isn’t really her thing, but see does seem to have adequate power in that domain as well.
Jessica Andrade is a bully of sorts who hasn’t had a decent showing in the last few fights, taking losses to Erin Blanchfield by submission and then getting knocked out by Yan Xiaonan. She did look great in the fight before that against an aging Lauren Murphy, but what can we really take from that? Andrade was the benefactor of a rise to stardom under fluke circumstances in my opinion. Her striking isn’t particularly technically sound, her wrestling is more brute force than technique, and her grappling is pretty mid too as far as I am concerned. I think her fall has begun and finding out just how far she is going to fall is the only excitement left on the Jessica Andrade show.
The world will be on Tatiana Suarez here, that isn’t a surprise. I am as well in my safe contests also. That being said, there is some merit to taking a stab at Andrade getting a fluke knockout or something in larger tournaments, because Suarez will have insane ownership.
FIGHT #2 TO TARGET (-360 FDGTD)
JEREMIAH WELLS ($16) vs. CARLSTON HARRIS ($15)
This should shape up to be one of the more intriguing fights on the slate, but that being said it is much more useful in both directions on the DraftKings platform in my opinion. On one side we have Jeremiah Wells who is an exciting fighter every time he steps into the cage. On the other, we have Carlston Harris, who doesn’t bring that same level of excitement but is a solid wrestler capable of dragging his opponents into deep waters with his ability to control positions.
Surprisingly we are estimating Harris to be over 30% owned on FanDuel which is surprising to me. I don’t believe you should be playing him at all on FanDuel. His win condition is simply to just grind out a dominant position for a slow, low-scoring, type of fight. With his ownership that high I cannot even imagine taking a chance on him being a high scorer because the probability of that is too low to justify the risk with his ownership that high.
As you probably gathered from the last paragraph, I am pretty firmly on Wells' side of this fight. I think he has all the upside, whether that upside comes from knockout or submission. Wrestling, which is where Harris shines, just doesn’t score well enough on FanDuel for my liking to take a shot at him.
FIGHT #3 TO TARGET (-190 FDNGTD)
BILLY QUARANTILLO ($18) vs. DAMON JACKSON ($13)
This fight could go either way. Billy Quarantillo is a wild man in the cage, capable of finishing a fight in many ways and performing in all areas of mixed martial arts. Damon Jackson tends to be a bit more under control, and should have the grappling advantage here, but is somewhat behind in every other area that the fight might go in my opinion.
My fandom for Billy Quarantillo keeps me from being on any side but his, but I wouldn’t snicker at anyone playing Damon Jackson this week at all. If you are looking for a cheap underdog that has a high ceiling, I don’t think there is a better choice on the slate.
