This fight is a lot harder to breakdown than the almost 3-1 odds will have you think. This is a what have you done for me lately which is why everyone has instantly counted out Colby. But every version of Colby that didn't fight Leon (and remember, he had an injury early in that fight), beats Joaquin. The insane pressure and wrestling would take away Buckley's speed and movement. The problem is, he looked so bad in his last fight that its hard to ignore. He has only fought once in 3 years and every since leaving ATT, we have seen zero improvements. When you are the best guy in the gym, especially in a sport like this, it is very hard to continue growth as an athlete. I am going to pick Buckley here, but outside of a round line over, I will likely stay away from this fight.
Colby Covington
The last version of Colby Covington that we saw and every other version of Colby Covington are very different people. The original version of Colby, the one who fought for the belt multiple times, is a great wrestler who has shown an incredible amount of heart and grit. He was a high pace, high volume guy that comes forward with punches in bunches and doesn't let you settle into a rhythm. But the last version we saw, the version who had his 4th title shot, was anything but… He was slow, tentative and didn't do any of the typical Colby things until the fight was too far gone. He was out struck and even out wrestled by a Brit.
Joaquin Buckley
Joaquin Buckley is a powerful striker with plenty of movement. He has good forward pressure and cuts angles well. We all know he has power and now we know he carries that power late into fights. He has done well working takedowns into his arsenal and has plenty of cardio. He is coming off the late KO win over Wonderboy where he was struggling with the range before finally finding the spot.
