I would to start the pick portion of this by reminding you that Wes Schultz is a dickhead. He was a D3 All American wrestler but came into his last fight doing dumb shit like iminari rolls. Fully jiu jitsu nerd bullshit and not actual wrestling attempts. I'm not mad he lost, that happens, I'm mad that he looked like a toddler at a tumbling class and not a high level wrestler. Dickhead activities. The thing is though, that did seem to be an anomaly. In none of his other fights is he flopping around like a fish out of water. So I am hesitant just assume he sucks and pick the other side because Ben's takedowns are not very good and if he comes forwarding and tries to outwrestle Wes, he may get tossed on his own ass. I am ultimately going to pick Ben because he has more tools in the bag, but again, we just don't know if Wes sucks sucks, or just sucked in his last fight.
Wes Schultz
Wes Schultz is a credentialed wrestler who made the leap to MMA about 5 years ago. He was 47-0 in high school, then an All American in JUCO then a D3 all American. You can see those wrestling accomplishments in most of his fight. He moves forward and works in takedowns. He does a nice job moving from one technique to another, for example he will shoot a double then work up the body for a bear hug and trip. On top he has good control and stays busy. But like so many other dominant wrestlers, his striking is almost non-existent so if he cant win the wrestling exchanges, he isn't winning the fight. He is coming off the KO loss to Damien Pinas
Ben Johnston
Ben Johnson is a well rounded guy who has no problem striking or grappling. He throws everything at 100% and loves to blast elbows inside the pocket while throwing heavy leag kicks outside the pocket. He does not have a nice job, instead he has actual Muay Thai experience and uses those techiques in the cage. His takedowns are solid, but mostly body locks and trips. His jiu jitsu is opportunistic and he does a great job snatgging rear naked chokes in exchanges.
