PFL hosts the first finals card of three this Friday on ESPN at 06:00 PM ET. This is a quick picks as university is currently ruining me.
THAD JEAN (10-0) vs. LOGAN STORELY (18-3) – Welterweight Championship
I could make a good argument for Storely winning this as I am not fully sold on Jean yet and I think he lost his last fight. But Jean has a great get up game and he will be dangerous for all 25 minutes. Storely's biggest weakness is his boxing defense and his awful head movement. Jean is dynamic and powerful, even if he is losing on the cards he will always be live for a knock out.
Pick: Thad Jean by KO/TKO. Low-medium confidence.
MOVLID KHAYBULAEV (23-0) vs. JESUS PINEDO (25-6-1) – Featherweight Championship
I really expected to pick Pinedo as the underdog, but oh well. Khaybulaev has not looked good in his return to the PFL. He is a wrestler but he will give up a rare size disadvantage to Pinedo who is massive. The one area Pinedo has never been tested is the take down defense but he manages range well and hits hard enough to always be dangerous here.
Pick: Jesus Pinedo by KO/TKO. Low confidence.
ASAEL ADJOUJ (9-1) vs. YVES LANDU (21-9) – Featherweight
This fight was booked earlier this year and is now rescheduled. Adjouj is a talented kick boxer but he is showing great ability elsewhere as well as he submitted Jose Perez in his last fight. Landu is a low volume striker who can be quite hard to hit, but I do just like Adjouj is the better striker so he will score more points.
Pick: Asael Adjouj by decision. Medium confidence.
JORDAN NEWMAN (7-0) vs. ESLAM ABDUL BASET (16-3) – Middleweight
Jordan Newman is a big time wrestler who was built up by Bellator. He is coming off a massive win against Imamshafi Aliev. This is now a step down in competition. Baset is not very good. He is a wrestler but he doesn't complete a lot of take downs, he just clinches. He also just quits when he can't get his wrestling going. Newman should finish him.
Pick: Jordan Newman by KO/TKO. High confidence.
JAKUB KASZUBA (14-0) vs. SERGIO COSSIO (27-10-1) – 160 lbs
I picked Cossio against Sanders and he embarrassed me. He sucks. His hands are low, he has no striking defense, he is small for the weight class. Kaszuba isn't great but he is a decent wrestler and he is going to have a big size advantage here.
Pick: Jakub Kaszuba by KO/TKO. High confidence.
HUSEIN KADIMAGOMAEV (11-1) vs. KYLE DRISCOLL (14-4) – Lightweight
This fight probably interests me the most as Driscoll is a very popular dog this week. This is definitely due to Husein's poor performance in his last fight which he lost but was then overturned. Husein was a very big featherweight wrestler who used kicks from range and shot a lot of single leg take downs. I actually went into this fight expecting to pick him as I always struggle to pick someone coming off a lay off, in this case Kyle has taken 2 years off. But Kyle is a much better striker, is going to have a size advantage, and has his own wrestling background. Husein's cardio is dreadful so I think as long Driscoll doesn't get finished early he should be fine.
Pick: Kyle Driscoll by KO/TKO. Low confidence.
NATHAN KELLY (11-4) vs. FREDRIK DUPRAS (8-2) – Featherweight
Kelly definitely hasn't turned out to be the fighter PFL wanted him to be but Dupras ONLY has a guillotine.
Pick: Nathan Kelly by submission. Low confidence.
