UFC Vegas 59 was an unheralded card with very little in the way of hype or fanfare but it absolutely delivered the goods. 10 fights, 10 finishes. I said it in my RFQP article, these “little” cards with lesser known fighters often turn out to be the most action packed because these young fighters are looking to make their bones and they come for war. Tonight’s card was a perfect example of that.

The curtain jerker ended in controversy when MARYA BUENO SILVA armed barred STEPHANIE EGGER early in the 1st round. MBS let go of the arm bar because she says she felt EGGER tap but EGGER did not admit to said tap. There was no visible replay of the tap but ringside judge RON McCARTHY said that he was 100% certain that he saw it and as such the ref called the fight. Congratulations to everyone who took the dog shot on MBS.

CORY MCKENNA ran through MIRANDA GRANGER who returned to the Octagon after a 2 year hiatus. MCKENNA almost finished her in the 1st round with a head & arm choke but GRANGER was saved by the bell. However they picked up right where they left off in the 2nd round and MCKENNA found the Von Flue choke early. She becomes the first woman in UFC history to pull off the Von Flue.  Congratulations to her on a dominant victory.

BRYAN BATTLE gets a murderous 1st round KO by vicious head kick in his welterweight debut against TAKASHI SATO who was out before he hit the floor. This kick was all shin to chin & carotid artery. I was concerned by how sucked out BATTLE looked at weigh ins but clearly it was not an issue on fight night. He moves to 3-0 in his UFC campaign.

MICHAL OLEKSIEJCZUK came out throwing absolute hammers against SAM ALVEY who never stood a chance in this one. ALVEY managed to regain his feet after being dropped but OLEKSIEJCZUK was all over him and Referee Herb Dean waved off the fight after ALVEY was dropped the 2nd time. OLEKSIEJCZUK looks absolutely fantastic at middleweight and I can’t wait until his next outing.

TERRENCE MCKINNEY submitted ERICK GONZALEZ by RNC in the 1st round after he pieced him up on the feet for a few minutes. GONZALEZ landed one good shot that prompted the takedown and subsequent submission from MCKINNEY who continues to impress. Afterwards MCKINNEY called out PADDY the Baddy PIMBLETT and I for one would absolutely love to see that fight.

SERGEY SPIVAC owned AUGUSTO SAKAI for the entire 1st round and finished him by GNP in the 2nd round. It was a very impressive performance that saw SPIVAC hit multiple trip takedowns and exert positional dominance. He continues to impress and I look forward to his next outing.

JULIANNA MILLER imposed her will on BROGAN WALKER from start to finish which culminated with her getting an extremely violent 3rd round GNP TKO by elbows  With that win she was crowned the 1st  TUF 30 title winner of the evening. This young lady might be short on experience but she is an absolute savage and I expect that she will have a very bright future under the UFC banner. Congratulations to her on a very impressive debut. I can’t wait to see what she does next.

MOHAMMAD USMAN wins the evening’s 2nd TUF finale by KO over ZAC PAUGA who was heavily favored in this match up.  PAUGA was out striking USMAN in the 1st but he got caught and slept by USMAN in the 2nd. This was the evening’s 2nd betting upset and USMAN cashes as a sizable underdog.  Congratulations to everyone who took the plus money shot on him.

GEOFF NEAL scores a 3rd KO victory against VICENTE LUQUE. He was the 3rd and final underdog to score the upset on this card and I believe he is the first man to finish LUQUE by KO. LUQUE’s legendary durability was on full display early and to his credit he worked his way back into the fight in the 2nd but “hands of steel” NEAL lives up to his moniker and closes the show with multiple uppercuts that crumpled LUQUE in what turned out to be an outstanding fight. Congratulations to everyone who took the plus money dog shot on him.

The main event was nothing short of spectacular as JAMAHAL HILL and THIAGO SANTOS went to war for almost 4 full rounds in what was easily FOTN and the evening’s longest bout. SANTOS was winning early with grappling exchanges and he managed to land damage on HILL but as soon as he began to fade HILL took over and closed the show in the 4th. I did not expect SANTOS to put up this much of a fight if I’m being honest but I’m glad he did because this was an instant classic.  Congratulations to HILL for fighting through what was easily the most adversity he has faced thus far in his UFC campaign. This young man continues to impress and I cannot wait until his next outing.

VEGAS 59 had 2 fight cancellations and it did not feature a lot of big marquee names but it was absolutely one of the best cards of the year in my opinion. My only complaint is that I wanted to see more but then I’m a UFC freak so that is always going to be the case with me. Nonetheless this was a card for the ages and I look forward to next week’s offering which features an epic main event between CHITO VERA AND DOMINICK CRUZ.
